Egyptisk valfeber – ska vi inte fira nu?

Det egyptiska valet tycks stå mellan salafister och Muslimska brödraskapet. Tyvärr kan inte båda förlora.

Äntligen är det här! Det efterlängtade egyptiska valet pågår som bäst, och det är jämnt – mellan salafistiska Nour-partiet och Muslimska brödraskapet, det vill säga. Sammanlagt fick dessa över 60 procent i första omgången, och i den andra förväntas salafisterna gå framåt ytterligare. Men alla dessa facebookare, twittrare och SMS:are som fyllde Tahrirtorget? Det största sekulära partiet fick 10 procent i första omgången.

Enligt The Economists korrespondent kommer resultatet som en överraskning för många.

The bold early advance of Egypt’s Islamists, in an electoral process that still has several rounds to run, has come as a shock to many, including the country’s own largely secular elite.

Nåja, man kan ju diskutera om det ändå inte är ungefär vad som var att vänta.

De salafistiska charmknuttarna är bekanta för dem som följt rapporteringen från Egypten. Vad man ska tro om Brödraskapet är möjligen en mer öppen fråga. New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof ger en någorlunda hoppfull bild – som dock talande nog levereras med en uppfordrande eftersläng om att man bör vara förhoppningsfull. (Är då detta det han verkligen tror eller det han vill tro?) En annan prognos ger Eric Trager i The New Republic, som intervjuat sju av Brödraskapets blivande parlamentariker.

Yet perhaps the most telling indicator of the Brotherhood’s theocratic outlook were the future parliamentarians’ comments on whether they would permit those who do not believe in the sharia to criticize or challenge it.  The answer was, without exception, no.  “It’s not allowed for Christians to come and say that the sharia is wrong,” said Abouel Fotouh.  “They are not specialists.”  Mukhtar agreed.  “There is no ultimate freedom, because your freedom ends at the freedom of other people,” he told me.  “And if I humiliate things that you respect, I violate your freedom.”

I senaste numret av The American Interest har Michael J Totten pratat med avhoppade brödraskapare som vittnar om hur det är ruskprickarna i partiet som vunnit mark.

Abdul-Jalil al-Sharnouby agrees that the Brotherhood has an extremist agenda. And he should know, because until a few months ago he served as the editor-in-chief of the Brotherhood’s website, www.ikhwanonline.com. He has been growing slowly more liberal over the past few years, and he finally had enough when the Brotherhood leadership forced him to publish a press release condemning the activists in Tahrir Square as traitors. “If the Brotherhood in its current state takes power”, he says, 

”it will be a serious crisis. There will be a mixing of what is religious and what is political. We have to give credit to what happened on the 25^th of January. We accomplished a feat that ensures that no one will ever rule Egypt again the way the pharaohs did. No one in the Brotherhood understand this, though, because they did not create the revolution. The Brotherhood as it exists now wants to come to power and rule the way Hosni Mubarak did.”

Men nu är det val i varje fall! Vem vet när det händer igen.

Det är precis vad som förväntades. "Oj hu islamister". Ja, men precis som socialister så har dom en tendens att glömma bort sin ideologi när dom får makten demokratiskt, så det är nog inget problem.
